Research activity

The Technical Platform is a shared resource that brings together facilities located on two sites:

Two 10 m² Calorimetric Chambers located in Clermont Ferrand at the CRNH d'Auvergne. They enable continuous calculations of human energy expenditure and RQ over long periods, based on measurements of respiratory exchanges (Indirect Calorimetry), in the following areas :

  • Precise calculation of 24-hour energy balance based on monitoring of intake and expenditure
  • Determination of energy expenditure kinetics
  • Assessment of the nutritional needs of a specific population (e.g., athletes)
  • Determination of metabolic disturbances
  • Study of the thermogenic properties of nutrients, medications, and nutritional formulas (diets)
  • Exploration of energy expenditure under normal living conditions

Calorimetric chambers allow for the precise assessment of energy expenditure and the utilization of energy substrates (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates) of an individual living in conditions that allow precise control of their physical activity and diet.

Four calorimetric cages for rats and mice are located in the UNH animal facility at the INRA site in Theix. The principle for measuring the energy expenditure of rats and mice is also based on indirect calorimetry.

Controlling these facilities and analyzing the generated data requires the development of specific programs, particularly in VBA and Matlab.
