1. Large-scale metabolomics: challenges and perspectives

Scientists working within our Metabolism Exploration Platform and the national MetaboHUB infrastructure to which it belongs, were interested in the current state of the application of metabolomics (study of metabolites/small molecules present in biological systems) and its future prospects.

The study conducted by the scientists revealed a wide variety of approaches and technologies used to analyze large populations, demonstrating the growing importance of metabolomics for research activities ranging from plant biology to human health. Despite the advances, challenges persist for very large-scale application (more robust and rapid analysis methods, advances in the fields of data science and semantics, etc.). Finally, the issue of interoperability remains essential to address, by first producing more standardized and reliable data, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Indeed, the comparison and sharing of data and results between studies are essential to move towards a long-term strategy, more based on the production of inter-disciplinary knowledge. Thus, metabolomics will be a key player in future ‘One-Health’ research (a comprehensive approach to health).
