Multi-criteria monitoring and optimization of personalized outdoor walking routes for seniors – ParcoursSenior

Abstract

ParcoursSenior addresses the challenges of ensuring safe outdoor walking for older adults through personalized walking routes tailored to their walking ability to promote regular outdoor walking.

The importance of mobility has led to significant developments in gait tracking technologies, including remote monitoring systems and wearable devices. ParcoursSenior aims to bridge the gap between collected information, walking ability, and the routes to be proposed.

Our goal is to develop a personalized digital twin that observes the walking effort of older adults over time, learns their outdoor walking ability, and suggests safe and diverse routes that adapt to their individual physical conditions. More specifically, ParcoursSenior aims to develop an integrated digital monitoring-analysis-decision chain for outdoor walking monitoring and route decision support.

The research is divided into four areas :

• Preliminary assessment to develop an intelligent system for assessing physical fitness and walking ability using wearable sensors, testing protocols, and machine learning algorithms;
• Path analysis to develop a tracking and analysis system to learn about the ability of older adults to navigate different routes;
• Multi-criteria route optimization to select safe, diverse walking routes adapted to the physical conditions of older adults;
• Studies of the perceived usefulness and acceptability of the project results by users, as well as recommendations for improvement.

The consortium has preliminary results regarding physical assessment, mobility monitoring via WellBeNet, support for seniors during outdoor walks and a community mapping tool for selecting routes.
